Форбес (Джемс-Дэвид Forbes, 1809—1868) — английский натуралист; был профессором физики в Эдинбургском унив. в 1833—60 гг. Ф. известен своими исследованиями по образованию ледников (глетчеров). Его труды «Travels through the Alps of Savoy» (Лонд., 1843), «Illustrations of the viscous theory of glacier motion» (в лондонских «Philosophical Transactions», 1845), «The tour of Montblanc and of Monte Rosa» (1855), «Reply to Tyndall on Rendu’s Théorie des glacier» (1860), «Norway and its glaciers»; «Papers on the theory of glaciers» (Л., 1859) и «Experiments on the temperature of the earth» (Эдинбург, 1846).
