Свэнсон (Williams Swainson, 1789—1856) — известный английский естествоиспытатель, жил и умер в Новой Зеландии. Научные труды С. посвящены преимущественно естественной истории птиц и насекомых и конхиологии. Он напечатал, между прочим: «A treatise of taxidermy; with the bibliography of zoologists» (Лондон, 1840): «A preliminary discourse on the study of natural history» (Л., 1841); «History of the Birds of Western Africa» (Jardine, «The natur. libr.», 1837, 2 т.); «Zoological illustrations, or original figures and descriptions of new, rare or otherwise interesting aminals etc.» (Л., 1820—1833, 6 тт.); «A treatise on the natural history and classification of animals» (Лонд., 1835); «The elements of modern conchiology etc.» (Л., 1834); «On the history and natural arrangement of Insects» (вместе с Шукардом, Л., 1840) и мн. др.
