Читая народные сцены Эртеля, забываешь, что читаешь сочинителя, — кажется, что живешь с народом; видишь не только все слабости этого народа, но и все те, превосходящие в бесчисленное число раз эти слабости, его достоинства, главное — его нетронутую и до сих пор, не революционную, а религиозную силу, на которую одну можно теперь в России возлагать свои надежды.
И потому для того, кто любит народ, чтение Эртеля большое удовольствие. Для того же, кто хочет узнать народ, не живя с ним, чтение это самое лучшее средство. Для того же, кто хочет узнать язык народный, не древний, которым уже никто не говорит, и не новый, которым, слава богу, говорят еще немногие из народа, а тот настоящий, сильный, где нужно — нежный, трогательный, где нужно — строгий, серьезный, где нужно — страстный, где нужно — бойкий и живой язык народа, которым, слава богу, еще говорит огромное большинство народа, особенно женщины, старые женщины, — тому надо не читать, а изучать народный язык Эртеля.

I received your letter and the two issues of the magazine. Both were intensely interesting to me; indeed, the oppression of a majority by the minority of a people and the corruption which flows from it, is a phenomenon which has always occupied my mind and at present is entirely occupying my attention. I will endeavour to convey to you what I think, both in a particular and a general way, about those causes from which those dreadful calamities have arisen and do arise, of which you write in your letter and which are also mentioned in the two numbers of the Hindoo magazine you sent me.
